Optimist Sailing

Club 420 Program


 

 OPTI SAILING PROGRAM
v    Open to sailors 8–14 years of age.

v  4 levels of instruction are offered ranging from basic sailing fundamentals through advanced racing technique.  (See Sessions & Fees for registration options and registration form.
 

v    Two Sessions, TBA and TBA

Level 1 – Mon - Fri, 9:15am - 12:15pm

For first-time sailors and those with no prior experience sailing an Optimist.  Learn the basic fundamentals of sailing, including technique, rigging, proper boat handling and maintenance.

Level 2 – Mon- Fri 9:15am - 12:15pm
For sailors with at least 1 full session of experience sailing an Optimist.  Strengthen the fundamental sailing skills, improve boat handling, and develop the confidence to rig and sail an Optimist without assistance.
Level 3 & 4 Recreational sailing – Mon - Fri, 1:30pm - 4:30pm
For advanced sailors who have mastered the fundamentals of sailing and demonstrated readiness to rig and operate an Optimist alone.  Develop advanced sailing techniques and boat handling, including basic racing skills and strategies. Optional participation in Green Fleets racing.

OPTI REGATTA SQUAD – TBA, Mon Fri, 1:30pm - 4:30pm
Sailors commit to a full summer session and will participate in all JSA sanctioned Opti regattas, including Champs. Sailors will expand on advanced racing techniques and strategies in a competitive racing environment.  Includes scrimmages with local yacht clubs.

OPTI BOOSTER CLINIC – TBA   9:15am – 12:15pm

Open to all enrolled DJST Level 2 sailors who can sail alone.  Individualized attention concentrating on all of the basic points of sail and boat handling in preparation for advancement to Level 3.

OPTI RACING CLINIC – TBA; 1:30pm – 4:30pm

For enrolled DJST Level 3 & 4 sailors only.  Individualized attention given to students with a concentration on fine-tuning racing techniques and skills for advancement in JSA regattas.

 CLUB 420 PROGRAM -
Two sessions: TBA

LEARN TO SAIL 420s: Mon – Fri,  9:15am - 12:15pm

v    Mature, qualified high school aged sailors with advanced level training are welcome to register for this program pending instructors sign-off. Students will learn the fundamentals of C-420 sailing, including instruction in proper boat handling, maintenance and technique, and an introduction to high school level competitive sailing.

v    Weight requirement for sailing 420’s is a combined 220 lbs. for skipper and crew.  Sailors should be a minimum of 100 lbs. to enroll.  Height is a strong consideration for participation as well.

v    This program offers 2 morning sessions, with a limit of 12 students per session.

Club 420 Intermediate:  Mon – Fri, 1:30p - 4:30pm

v    Open to those experienced high school age sailors who have some experience and wish to progress in sailing the Club 420.  Must have successfully completed advanced sailing technique in Optimists, Blue Jays or Lasers or be referred by DJST instructors in order to register.

v    Sailors will gain experience in the roles of both skipper and crew.

v    Weight requirement for sailing 420’s is a combined 220 lbs. for skipper and crew.  Sailors should be a minimum of 100 lbs. to enroll.  Height is a strong consideration for participation as well.

v    Sailors will have opportunities to scrimmage with local yacht clubs.
